What is a Biokineticist?

A Biokineticist is a medical exercise therapist, who functions in alliance with other health professionals. Biokinetics is recognised by and registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. You may know that Diabetes Mellitus is a disorder of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism that results in high blood glucose, other metabolic disturbances and if uncontrolled, long-term mainly vascular damage and dysfunction. However, to gain insight into the holistic management of diabetes it is essential to have a good understanding of the Core Concepts involved.

What does a Biokineticist do?

We assess the client’s readiness for exercise and prescribe the correct exercise as a form of treatment for diabetes, cardiovascular, neurological and orthopaedic conditions. A Biokineticist can have a significant impact on a person’s rehabilitation and lifestyle.

What is the role of the Biokineticist at the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology?

We are part of a team of doctors, educators, dieticians, podiatrists and psychologists (CDE team). The Biokineticist assesses the patient, prescribes and supervises the correct exercise to aid in the management of the patients’ Diabetes.

The concept is to develop a tailored exercise routine specific to each individuals needs, based on their pathologies be it chronic disease and/or orthopaedic.

"He who has no time for exercise, must create time for illness"
